today's date is Saturday, November 26, 2005 i know i should have mentioned this a couple of months ago, but don't hold your breathe waiting for this page to get updates. [[ though this page will always be here in its current form ]] i have completely moved my personal computing life over to the apple macintosh platform. the first week of july 2005, i made this bart's pe page. then during the first week of august 2005, my windows computer had a complete meltdown ( software that is, not hardware ). so instead of rebuilding my windows computer, i just moved it all over to my iMac, which is something that i had been wanting to do anyway for a year or so. the ms windows meltdown was the last straw and provided the impetus for me to finally get off my duff and make the switch to apple. and you know, i have no regrets. i should have done this years ago. osX is a great operating system, simple, easy, robust. i highly recommend apple to anyone who wants to simplify their computer life. thanks, and may peace doggedly follow you. mikey{:-) |

before i go any further, i should mention a few things. forgive me if i tend to ramble, but that is what i do best.
i'm fairly new to Bart's PE, which you can find here.
it's a wonderful piece of software engineering that enables one to boot a computer, from a cd, into a windows environment.
Bart Lagerweij is a genius, and i hope that someday he will be richly rewarded. that being said, if all you do is download
the pe builder program from bart's site, and use it, as is, to burn a bootable cd, all one really gets is a beautiful windows environment,
but you can not really do much with it; just like installing windows on a computer for the first time, sure you can boot the computer,
but until you spend the next 3 hours installing all of the drivers and other programs, it's not really useful for much.
it's the same thing with bart's pe, and that's where all these plugins come in. they allow one to make a bootable cd that is truly
useful, from running antivirus software to rescuing data off of dead pc's when windows has crashed and burned.
my plugins are pretty simple and basic. when the word "registry" is mentioned, i break out in hives and my brain freezes up hard.
i know i should seek medical help of some form, but therapy causes my brain to catch on fire, which does help to thaw it out, but
bandages can get rather expensive after a while. so i like to keep things simple.
my main reason, for using bart's pe, is to disinfect family and friends' computers from all the malware that exists. if they can
not be disinfected and cleaned up, then i need to be able to rescue data off of them. to that end,
there are a few plugins made by other people, that i would consider essential. they add basic functionality to the core pe program
and give you a more natural windows experience.
my disclaimer and due credit... unless otherwise noted, the list below represents plugins that other people made, who are
smarter and more talented than me. i liked them, they seemed useful, so i listed them here. before i made this web page,
i went on a 3 week rampage and downloaded a ton of plugins and tried them out, and burned a whole lot of cd's in the process.
it is all rather a blur right now. middle age is catching up on me. i need a nap.
the download is their complete plugin, so the author will be listed in them. i thank them all for their work! as always,
it only makes common sense to check with the author's web site to see if newer versions exist,
that information should also be in the download.
if the plugin needed files added, to make them functional, then all i did was follow their directions to add the necessary program files.
i will make a note of this to the plugins where i added the files. since i like simple, i am offering the complete plugin for download,

hah, and you thought you were done reading!! well i'm not done rambling yet! this screenshot is my computer specifications. that's right, every time
i made a bart cd, i would go upstairs and test it out on my windows98se computer with an AMD K6-2 500MHz with only 192MB RAM. why do you care? well, right below, i highly recommend using at least 3 plugins, the ramsize plugin, the setpagefile plugin, and the vbrun plugin. with ramsize, you can create a RAM disk that is larger than the default of 32MB. i always created a RAM disk that was 128MB in size. that's 2/3 of my available RAM. i needed to use the RAM disk a lot, and with 128MB, i never worried about running out of room on it. to compensate for using up so much available RAM, the first thing that i would always do is set the pagefiles.sys to my C: drive, using the setpagefile plugin. since this created a swap file on the C: drive, i never had any problems using two-thrids of my RAM for a RAM disk, and no program ever complained about low virtual memory. it's just very cool is all. the other thing i would like to note is that, for the most part,
bart's pe ran pretty smoothly on this computer. with the larger programs, there would be some seconds before the program did load. but on the whole, the perceived experience, of using a bart's pe bootable disk on this computer, was ok. it did take a while to boot up initially and configure networking, but running the programs was decent and overall not too bad. so what is the moral of the story... give yourself a heaping big RAM drive, and the first thing that you should do, after bart's pe has finished booting, is to create a swap file ( aka the pagefile.sys ) on the C: drive.
ok boys and girls, here is a plugin for something that i had totally forgot about, but you should be aware of it nonetheless.... XP and XPsp1 will not
play nicely with hard drives over 137GB in size. The ATAPI driver, for Windows XP Service Pack 1, aka SP1, (and earlier) does not use
48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA).
with XP sp2, this was fixed. but if you are using XP sp1 to build your bart's pe iso's... then you need the atapi_331958 plugin.
this plugin makes a registry entry to EnableBigLba. this plugin also contains a hotfix to fix XP when
Entering Standby or Hibernation or When Writing a Memory Dump (331958) to hard drives larger than 137GB.
the hotfix program files have been added.
i don't have any of these huge hard drives, but this plugin is a good idea if you only use XP sp1.

yup, i spent 2 whole nights checking every link on bart's site that offered plugins. i downloaded most of them, looked at the instructions,
but i did not end up testing a lot of them. and i did not keep them seperated very well either, they all just ended up in a couple of folders.
during all of this is when i found royalbox's barts pe plugin creator.
a very cool program indeed. this is what i used to make my own plugins. it is a simple and completely painless way to make plugins.
my brain freezes up and catches on fire too many times, so go download royalbox's barts pe plugin creator and save yourself, it's already too late for me.
